The development of cultural methods for control of Striga in maize in Malawi
1991
Kabambe, V.H. (Chitedze Agricultural Research Station, Lilongwe (Malawi))
Maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield in Striga infested fields in Malawi are considered to be substatially reduced. A trial was conducted to develop and evaluate several cultural control methods for Striga asiatica (L.) O. Kuntze in the same Striga infested field with the same randomisation for 4 years. The trial investigated the effects of variety, manure, fertilizer (nitrogen and phosphorus) application and weeding method on Striga incidence and grain yield of maize. The application of manure improved yields in unfertilized plots only. The use of hybrid maize (as opposed to synthetic variety) and the use of fertilizer resulted in improved maize yields and reduced numbers of Striga emerged per plant. Hand pulling of Striga every 10-14 days did not improve yields or reduce Striga incidence
