Twenty-seven different strains of triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) were studied for grain yield and its 15 contributing characters and variability, character associations and contribution of different characters towards grain yield determined. Wide genotypic variability was observed for all the characters. Grain yield had significant positive associations with productivity per day, productive tillers and harvest index. Other significant positive associations were: productivity per day with productive tillers, grains per ear and harvest index; grains per ear with productive tillers, grains per ear and harvest index; grains per ear with sink capacity and length of ear; length and area of flag leaf; days to maturity and duration of vegetative phase. On the other hand, significant negative associations were observed between days to maturity and sink capacity and between duration of vegetative and anthesis to maturity stages. Large positive direct influence on grain yield was exerted by plant height, length of flag leaf, duration from anthesis to maturity and grains per ear. Productive tillers also influenced grain yield moderately in the positive direction. On the other hand, large negative direct influence by area of flag leaf and 1000-grain weight and moderate negative effect by duration of vegetative phase and length of ear on grain yield were also exerted. However, the direct effects of some characters on grain yield seemed to be modified to a greater or lesser extent by indirect effects of a number of characters
