Septoria nodorum blotch of triticale in northern Portugal

Triticale diseases have been recorded in Northern Portugal since the beginning of the UTAD Triticale Program, late in the 70's. Ergot and septoria nodorum blotch are considered to be the major diseases according to the surveys carried out by the authors and cooperators. More interest has been given to septoria since the surveys stressed the increased occurrence and severity of the disease. The severity of septoria seems to be more determined by favorable conditions for infection during autumn than by the infection of seed sown. Among eight graminaceous species that are potential hosts of the fungus, Hordeum murinum showed the highest infection sites per cm2. Studies in 18 triticale advanced lines and cultivars showed that triticale height was negatively correlated with disease score (r = - 0.806) and positively correlated with maturity (r = 0.852) and that disease score and maturation were negatively correlated (r = -0.772). Principal component analysis K - mean clustering clearly separate triticales of CIMMYT and European origins
