Polytene chromosomes preparations were obtained by a simple orcein-stained squash technique using salivary gland cells from larvae of the rice gall midge, Orselia oryzae (Wood-Mason). The chromosome number was found to be highly polyploid while banding pattern on one of the chromosomes appeared promising for further investigations.
