Investigated herbicides, insecticides as well as fungicide were inhibitory to the N2-fixing blue-green algae. Herbicide Surcopur 360 EC which contains 360 g. propanil in 1 l emulsifier is the most toxic to the algae. The experiments showed that emulsifier modified or increased toxicity of propanil to the algae. The concentration of LC50 level of Surcopur 360 EC for A. siamensis and A. lutea were 0.07 and 0.45 micro g.ml.-1, respectively. Whereas the LC50 of pure propanil for A. siamensis A. lutea were 0.3 and 1.2 micro g.ml.-1, respectively. As a rough guideline, herbicide Surcopur 360 EC application at the rate 10 kg/ha. puts a concentration of approximately 10 ppm (micro g.ml.-1) of the compound in the top layer of paddy soil. At such concentration, the results of this study indicate that this herbicide should totally kill the both N2-fixing blue-green tested. It should be emphasized that N2-fixing organisms such as blue-green algae are very important for N-economy of paddy fields. Therefore, it should be recommended to avoid using propanil in paddy fields.
