Oliveira, D.M. (Ministry of Agriculture, Kingston (Jamaica))
A survey of the diseases affecting goats was conducted in Jamaica. The survey involved 600 goats from all parishes and agroecological zones. The protocol followed included palpation, EDTA blood sample, clotted sample, sterile nasal swabs, body measurement and age by dentation. There was no brucellosis present, however a number of animals exhibited sera positive evidence of antibodies to Blue Tongue, Chlamydia, Q-fever, Toxoplasmosis and C.A.E. and leptospirosis. Coccidiosis appeared as a major growth retarding and occasionally fatal intestinal disease.
