Strategic treatment of Fasciola gigantica in the Northeast of Thailand
1986
Lertrak Srikitjakarn (Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Khon Kaen (Thailand))
Single treatment with Niclofolan at the end of rainy season in October decreased the Fasciola infection rate of a buffalo herd from 50 % to 0 % and 5 % for a period of 2.5 and 6 months, reaching 10 % after 10 months. Monthly examination of the infection in the intermediate host population, Lymnaea rubiginosa, was also done in the same area. Depending on the season, the infection rate of the snail population increased to more than 30 % in the first three months, then decreased abruptly. At the end of the examination period, one year after a single fasciolicid treatment in the buffalo herd, no cercaria infected snails were found. The strategic treatment against F. gigantica in Northeastern Thailand should be done in September.
