Relationship between leaf morphology and water consumption of some forest tree seedlings [Acacia confusa Merr.; Aleurites montana (Lour.) Wils.; Eraxinus griffithii C.B.Clarke; Melia azedarach Linn; Liquidambar formosana Hance; Zelkova formosana Spach; Acacia auriculiformis Linn; Eucalyptus Camoldulensis Dehnh;] seedlings

Results revealed that Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia confusa, and Eucalyptus camaldulensis had stomata and palisade parenchyma on both upper (adaxial) and lower (abaxial) leaf surfaces, while other species had palisade parenchyma only on adaxial surface, and stomata on abaxial surface. Water consumption of seedling studied varied with season. Three deciduous trees including Aleurites montana, Liquidamber formosana and Melia azedarach were not transpired in January (winter), while other five species had higher transpiration rate any season (3.50-10.50 cubic cm./hour/tree). Regarding yearly transpiration rates, Acacia auriculiformis and Acacia confusa performed the highest (4.17 cubic cm./hour/tree), while Melia azedarach was at the lowest (2.50 cubic cm./hour/tree). For drought resistant study, all eight tree species could withstand soil moisture percentage of 20.40-30.60 in which both Acacia species were the most drought tolerant species while Aleurites montana was the most sensitive. Drought tolerance and water consumption of all species studied had tendency to be related to leaf morphology.
