The systematics status of crocodile in Bangladesh
1992
Rahman, M.M.
This survey shows that the crocodilian population in Bangladesh has decreased to an alarming state. This is because of its indiscriminate hunting mainly for the skin trade. The endangered situation of the species has upset the ecosystem of their aquatic habitat. A survey between 1981 and 1987 estimated a total of 81 crocodiles existing in the country with a restricted distribution. It is evident from the investigation that the crocodiles are important assets in the economic development of Bangladesh like those in India and other countries of the world. The paper emphasizes the importance of the residual population which can be selected for conservation and multiplication by analytical research as the crocodiles are now in dire need at least for the snake of their existence.
