Sowing date, atmospheric temperature and day length had marked effects on the yield and yield contributing characters of niger grown under rainfed conditions. Earlier sowing (16 October) gave significantly higher yield (1190 kg/ha). The yield reduction due to delayed planting ranged from 21% to 92%. Late sowing shortened the development phase and total duration of the crop (110 to 89 days). Higher temperature in February (above 30 deg C) at flowering hastened the seed setting and maturity. Plant height, number of capsules per plant, seeds per capsule, branches per plant decreased, while sterile capsules and infertile seeds per plant increased due to late sowing.
