Variability and some genetic parameters of 15 potato varieties were studied to select parents for a hybridization program. The variety Obelix performed best in respect of yield, weight of tubers/hill and number of tubers/hill. Dry matter content, related to specific gravity and starch content was high in Producent and Origo. Considering the genetic parameters, high GCV was observed for plant height, number of stem/hill, foliage coverage and number of tubers/hill. High heritability values were obtained for plant height, specific gravity and foliage coverage. Plant height exhibited the highest genetic gain followed by the number of tubers/hill, tubers yield and starch content. Correlation studies showed significant positive relationship of yield with all the characters except plant height and number of tubers/hill, while it was negatively correlated with all four qualitative characters viz. dry matter content, starch content, specific gravity and insect infestation. However, starch content, dry matter and specific gravity of tubers were highly interrelated. Some of the cultivars may be selected as prospective parents in the hybridization program considering their qualitative and quantitative parameters.
