Problems and prospects in dairy cattle breeding in Bangladesh
1991
Peterson, P.H.
The possibilities of improving zebu cattle (indigenous) to the tropical are discussed. The breeding programs which have successfully been implemented in the industrialized part of the world are not applicable in developing countries because of poor infrastructure, organizational problems etc. A review of cross breeding trials involving Bos indicus and Bos taurus in the tropical conditions leads to negative side effects on disease and reproduction traits, and exploitation of systematic cross breeding programs involve organizational complications which at present are difficult to handle under local conditions. Under Bangladesh conditions more basic knowledge about the local breed x production system combinations is needed in order to identify possible innovations.
