Oven dried leaves of some rice varieties and somaclonal lines were analyzed for changes in biochemical constituents after infection with Xanthomonas campestris Pv. oryzae. Moderately susceptible somaclonal lines of p-3, p-7, p-8 and p-9 synthesized higher amounts of total sugar, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, total phenol, orthodihydroxyphenol and ascorbic acid, compared to the susceptible variety BR3. All the constituents except ascorbic acid were higher in the healthy than the infected leaves. Changes in these constituents correlated with pathogenicity.
