This paper is the first part of a review on recent progress in insect molecular biology. It summarizes recent information in the following areas of research: 1. Sex determination and somatic sexual differentiation in Drosophila: the regulatory gene cascade and regulation by alternative transcript splicing. 2. Genes related to insect reproduction: vitellogenin/yolk protein genes and chorion genes. 3. Molecular mode of action of insect hormones: ecdysone and juvenile hormone receptors and hormone response elements of target genes. 4. Molecular aspects of insect neuropeptides: AKH, EH, PTTH and bombyxin
