Programmed irrigation and fertilization of Norway spruce on a poor sandy soil over a period of 20 years has increased the increment to the level of the best sites in Denmark, 24.4 m3 stem volume per ha and year as compared to 6.7 m3 in the untreated control plots. Pinus contorta used as nurse trees have not responded to the manipulations
