Peda, U. (Estonian Research Inst. of Animal Breeding and Veterinary Science, Tartu (Estonia))
Metabolic status of farm animals was studied on 13 farms, involving 59 breeding bulls, 334 dairy cows, 150 calves and 53 pigs in all. On all of the farms metabolic disturbances of animals were diagnosed concerning the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and minerals, whereas there was a considerable difference between the farms as to the character and range of the disturbances. Mutual relationships between metabolic parameters were studied as well. It appeared that correlative groups connected closely were formed by such characteristics as age, daily output, lactation, milk production, AST enzyme activity, the content of glucose in blood, the content of bilirubin, ketone bodies, calcium and carbamide in blood serum. A computer programme was made, which provides for a graph of metabolic profile and simplifies the interpretation of primary results in evaluating the metabolic status of farm animals
