To clear up the most effective milk cooling equipment experiments with 16 milk cooling systems were carried out on the 32 small homestead dairy farms during 85 milkings. 7 reservoir coolers and 9 can coolers were studied. The results of the investigation indicated, that icewater reservoir coolers IP 600, IP 400 and IP 300 and direct evaporating reservoir coolers with the capacity of 400 litres manufactured by MKT, Finland, proved to be the better ones. In case of cooling udderwarm milk in summer, the temperature of milk in the reservoir coolers is as follows: at the end of the evening milking 8.3+-0.1 - 16.4+-1.0 deg C; before the morning milking 0.8+-0.1 - 2.6+-0.4 deg C at the end of the morning milking 8.2+-1.9 - 11.3+-0.2 deg C whereas milk cools down to the temperature of 4 deg C within 0.4+-0.1 - 0.6+-0.2 hours. The estimate of milk cooling efficiency, according to 100-mark system, is 79-90 marks
