The development of Helopeltis antonii Sign. (Hemiptera: Miridae) on pod of fine flavour cocoa and bulk cocoa was studied. In this experiment a number of newly hatched first instar nymphs of H. antonii was reared separately on bulk and on fine flavour cocoa pods. The biological attributes of H. antonii were measured and the free amino acids, total sugar and fat contents of the pod husk were determined. The results show that the average number of surviving females and the female fecundity tended to be higher on the bulk cocoa pod than that on the fine flavour one. The total sugar content of the bulk cocoa pod husk was higher than that of the fine flavour cocoa pod husk, whereas the 16 free amino acids and total fat contents in the pod husk of both cocoa types were not significantly different. It was suggested that the higher total sugar content in the husk of bulk cocoa gives the higher fecundity of the insects on this cocoa type.
