Influence of refining and bleaching on the quality of palm kernel oil produced by expeller extraction

Palm kernel oil extraction by solvent i.e. hexane, showed that the operation cost and investment are higher than expeller extraction for similar capacity. People choose expeller extraction because its process could be adjusted to the amount of palm kernel produced by palm oil mill. Palm kernel oil extracted by expeller method produces less transparent oil and higher heavy metal content than oil extracted by solvent. Therefore, chemicals should be added on refining process and followed by bleaching process. The experiment revealed that refining treatment with chemical addition as citric acid 0.3 percent, phosphoric acid 0.1 percent and calcium carbone 0.1 percent decreases iron content from 14.83 ppm to 0.1 ppm, and copper content 0.28 ppm could be eliminated perfectly. Palm kernel oil bleached by adsorbent produces transparent oil. The utilization of 0.25 percent galeon v2 as adsorbent produces more transparent oil, lower production cost and more acceptable in market than oil treated by American Super Fitral and activated carbon
