The silvicultural management of the mixed dipterocarp forest in Brunei Darussalam

The biologically diverse climax of natural mixed dipterocarp (MDF) and other forest types in Brunei Darussalam present both opportunities and challenges. Presently, one of the major highlights in the forestry policy of the country has been one of a strong emphasis on forest conservation and protection of the environment. These are being vigorously pursued and a low-cut strategy is being implemented in the production forests. At the same time, efforts are being intensified to rehabilitate the logged-over MDF so as to maximize the per ha productivity of the natural forest land as well as to establish new timber plantations in order to augment the inevitable shortfall in the local timber supply in the future. New silvicultural management strategies are now being developed for the logged and poor MDF in the country, in line with the intensification of the management of these areas. However, progress has been greatly hampered by lack of reliable and useful data. This paper describes forestry practices presently being implemented in Brunei Darussalam and highlights current thinking in the silvicultural management of the primary and logged MDF.
