A study on parasites of some aquatic birds in Basrah

A total of 465 aquatic birds belonging to six genera including purple gallinula, coot, moorhen, black-necked grebe, purple heron, white-tailed plover. The alimentary tracts and livers of all collected birds were dissected and examined for the endoparasites. Seventeen species of helminths were recovered and recorded for the first time in Iraq out of them, ten species of trematoda, three of gestoda, three of nematoda, and one of acanthocephala. Taxonomic disposition and description of these helminths species are given in addition to the life cycles as well as the pathological effects, since the purple gallinule, coot and moorhen an economically important, therefore their seasonal variation were conducted. They found that no significant differences were observed in the infection of male and female, nevertheless, the infection was inversely related with the increase of host's weights
