Studies on the development of efficient analytical methods for pesticide residues in agricultural commodities

Along with the increasing world population, there has been a growing demand for more food. To increase the production of food, it is unavoidable that a variety of pesticides is used to control pests through the various stages of agricultural production. While the need of pesticide for agriculture production should be generally recognized today, there has been some concern about their safety to the consumers. Governments have taken the appropriate actions to safeguard the consumers. Since enactment of the Pesticide Residues Amendment to the Pesticide Regulation Law 1971, in Japan, tolerances for 229 pesticides have been established on agricultural commodities as of April 10, 1990. The analytical methods adequate for the detection of appropriate amount of the pesticide in agricultural commodities have also been established. Such methods are useful when it is necessary to analyze only the specific pesticide residue in agricultural commodities. With increase of the kind of pesticides used in agricultural production, however, it has become impossible to monitor the level of pesticide residues in general food effectively and meaningfully by these individual methods. Since the spray history of a given commodity is generally unknown, it is economically and physically impractical to apply a large number of individual methods for all the significant chemical residues that may be present. The only reasonable approach to monitor the pesticide residues in food is to simplify analyses by developing methods which measure more than one pesticide at a time
