Studies on the methods of stabilizing and increasing yield in early cultivated rice, 4: Correlation between grain yield and characters related with yield

In the six years from 1980 to 1985, field experiments were conducted to evaluate cultivation methods in order to get a stable and high yield of an early cultivated rice, Koshihikari. From the data of the field experiments, the relationships between grainyield and yield-related characteristics of the rice were discussed. Results of the field experiments for the 6 years showed that grain yields from deep-layer application of fertilizers were higher than those from the surface-layer application of fertilizers. The deep-layer application of fertilizers appeared to be a valuable method for use with early cultivated rice in warm regions of Japan. Grain yields showed high positive correlations with the percentage of ripened grains, number of ripened grains / M2 (percentage of ripened grains x no. grains / m2) and weight of one thousand brown grains. There was also a positive correlation between train yields and number of ears. A multiple regression analysis of yield components and characteristics related to yield suggested that about sixty percentage of the rice grain yields in Koshihikari could by determined by four components of yields: percentage of ripened grains, thousand-grain weight, number of grains / m2 and number of ears
