There were twelve plots where application of phosphorous, potassium or magnesium fertilizers as basal dressing were different. Seeds of Bupleurum falcatum L. were sowed on October 26 in 1988. Germination started in mid-March in the next year and evened in mid-April. Plant age in leaf number was observed every week from May 25 to November 2, when growth ceased. Transitional shape of leaf number drawed typical sigmoid curve (Fig. 1). The rate of emergence was very low until about 10th leaf stage (r1-phase). From 10th to 25th leaf stage (t2-phase), the rate was much higher and about 1.5 times as that until 10th leaf stage. After emergence of about 25th leaf, the rate was declined and finally new leaf emergence stopped (t3-phase). Total leaf number was about 30 (Fig. 2). When leaf number index (LNI) reaches about 77 in rice plants, panicle intiation starts and also the rate of leaf emergence is decreasing. In Bupleurum falcatum, LNI in t-2 phase was about 80 that was almost the same value in rice plants. These above-mentioned results were almost the same with no regard to plots. While only 11 % of plants were bolted in spring sowing (2), in autumn sowing bolting was observed in 47 %. Flowering began from mid-July and continued to early November in most of plants. At the same time some remained to be flower buds at frost falling. Conspicuous individual variation was confirmed especially in flowering (Table 2). Bolting plants in autumn sowing had rosette and stem leaves. Correlation between length and width of ten leaves in individual plant was positively significant in about 60 % plants. According to the leaf shape, Bupleurum falcatum could be classified into wide type and narrow one. Judging from the formula of regression line between width and length, the boundary value at width to length would be 0.1 (Fig. 9)
