The new sweet potato cultivar "Fusabeni" (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) was registered as Norin 42 1989. "Fusabeni" was selected at the National Agriculture Research Center from a cross made in 1977 between Kanto 85 and Chikei 7238-19. The female parent is a selected line with good skin color, good tuber shape and multiple disease resistance for table use. The male parent is a selected line with good appearance for table use. A number of 760 seeds of the above cross were seeded and 56 plants were selected mainly according to their root tuberous ability, skin color and shape in 1978. Selections for the skin color, tuber shape, eating quality, productivity and resistance to important diseases were performed at the Yotsukaido Laboratory of National Agricultural Research Center in 1979-82 and one promising line was selected and named "Kanto 95". In 1982-88, regional adaptability trials were carried out in several prefectural experiment stations
