[Some questions on livestock breeding and selection]

The paper aims to analyse some basic aspects related to the improvement of the efficiency of livestock breeding and selection in Mongolia. Devising non-conventional methods of transferring traditional experiences and skills from herder to herder is one of the solutions. The author analyses past achievements and lessons of crossing indigenous livestock with imported breeds under the livestock improvement schemes. He concludes that in the specific conditions of Mongolia, the improvement of a given species of native livestock must be based on tradition. The paper gives an example of how to develop a national livestock record keeping system
