Isolation and efficacy evaluation of Bacillus thuringiensis in the control of Heliothis spp. on tobacco

One hundred fifty four Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) were isolated from soils collected from different tobacco growing areas of Regions 1, 2 and Misamis Oriental [Philippines]. Five promising isolates provided 63% to 85% tobacco budworm mortality. Tobacco plants applied with the local B.t. isolates as dust, spray or bait had significantly lower damage (18%-30%) than the untreated plants (36%-42%). When applied as spray, all the isolates gave similar protection to tobacco as the commercial B.t. As dust, isolates no. 36, 75, and 1091 were similar to the commercial B.t. Among these local isolates, no. 75 applied as dust gave the best protection to tobacco against budworm with only 17.83% damaged leaves. Population of the predatory tobacco bug was maintained in the treated and untreated plants
