Three separate studies were conducted in farmer's field in Luzon and Visayas region [Philippines] from 1991-1992 to evaluate the biological efficacy of Niclosamide 250 EC against the golden apple snail Pomacea sp. infesting lowland direct-seeded and transplanted rice. Effect of water depths at the time of Niclosamide application and in comparison with botanical pesticides were also evaluated. Results showed that Niclosamide 250 EC at 1.0 and 1.5 L/ha effectively controlled golden snail attacking young rice seedlings within 24 hours after treatment. Number of eggmasses and crop damage were very minimal on treated plots. Niclosamide 250 EC at 1.0 L/ha applied one day before seeding provided higher snail mortality of 100% as compared with botanical pesticides: Nicotiana tabacum (20.4%), Gliricidia sepium (14.2%) and Derris elliptica (14.2%) at 3 days after treatment
