Morpho-anatomical and ecological studies of the Eusporangiate ferns in some forest areas of Bukidnon [Philippines]

Morphological and anatomical studies on the four species of eusporangiate ferns revealed that Ophioglossum reticulum and Botrychium daucifolium showed marked similarities with each other, hence, they both belong to the family Ophioglossaceae. Their common morphological characters include the absence of circinate venation, short statue, usually not exceeding half a meter in height, roots devoid of hairs and sporangia are borne as spike-like structures. Anatomical examination of the two members of the family Ophioglossaceae revealed the ectophloic siphonostele or eustele in several organs of the plant body and the stipe devoid of hard tissues. On the other hand, Angiopteris palmiformis and Marattia sylvatica are huge, large ferns, usually over a meter and a half tall and characterized by the presence of persistent paired stipules at the base of their stipe. These two species belong to family Marattiaceae and are further characterized by having soriate sporangia which are located on the surface of their leaflets. The ecological data regarding these eusporangiate ferns have shown that O. reticulatum has the highest density among the species studied but concentrated only in Fortchacu 3, Malinao, Kalilangan, Bukidnon. However, A. palmiformis has been recorded in almost all the areas studied and is therefore adapted to grow in a variety of places with varying altitudes. B. daucifolium has been noted to grow in areas having high soil percent organic matter content, and having a Kidapawan clay loam soil
