Assessment of cooperative managed rice post-harvest facilities in Cagayan Valley [Philippines]
1992
Ramos, A.M.
The farmer-members utilized the cooperative facilities not only to patronize the cooperative but to avail of patronage refunds, lower custom/rental fees and the provision of storage and transport facilities. Furthermore, accessibility and availability were the main considerations in using the cooperative facilities. The utilization of cooperative post-harvest facilities increased as fees decreased, the income and farm inventory increased, the price of palay increased, the quality of output improved, the availability of the equipment increased, and the difficulty in getting labor was experienced. Other factors having positive effects on utilization were the presence of other sources of income, the method of threshing, the labor days, the farm size, the moisture content and the volume of palay. No significant differences were noted on the labor availability and other drying costs obtained by users and non-users of cooperative-managed dryers and on the income from rice farm and family labor availability of rice mill respondents. Several benefits were received by the users of cooperative post-harvest facilities. The primary benefits were savings from lower custom/rental fees and increase in income from patronage refunds. The users of mechanical dryers received higher income from better quality of palay and the users of cooperative mill had higher recoveries
