A set of diallel crosses involving seven parents and their 21 F1s were studied to characterize the plant type behavior of a population under good management condition (E1; irrigated and fertilized with DAP at 100 kg/ha at the time of sowing and 15 days after sowing) and poor management condition (E2; rain-fed and at the native soil fertility level, which was low). The correlation coefficients suggested that yield attributes such as number of pods/plant, number of seeds/plant, number of pod-bearing nodes/plant, 100-seed weight and harvest index were positively correlated with seed yield. Path analysis indicated the importance of number of pods/plant, 100-seed weight, position of first pod, number of seeds/pod and days to 50 flowering in determining seed yield. Implications of association analysis and its role in the improvement of seed yield are discussed
