[Supplementary irrigation in relation to durum wheat quality]

In dryland agriculture, water and nitrogen are the principal factors limiting production, thus, an experiment was conducted at Tel-Hadya for two seasons (1989-90, 1990-91) with durum wheat (Cham1, Cham2, Cham3, Hourani and Gezira17) with N fertilization (0, 50, 100 Kg/ha) and varying irrigation levels equivalent to 0, 20, 60, 80 and 100 of water requirement to compensate for evapotranspiration to reach field capacity. The soil at the site was a heavy textured deep vertic chromoxeret, as anticipated, increased irrigation inputs increased yield parameters, while the effect of N was less consistent, generally, maximum response occurred at the lowest N level. However, with respect to quality, the extent of irrigation and protein content were inversely related, but N tended to counterbalance this decrease.
