Flowering behavior of the first ratoon canes of 177 varieties was investigated under field conditions. Out of 177 only 38 varieties did not flower. Flowering took place between late October and early December. Out of the flowering ones only 47 varieties could be used as female parents in bi-parental cross program. Three methods of breeding were employed during the last season. These included open, bi-parental and poly-crosses. Most of fertilization was not fruitful due to some mistake with the solution. Seed set of these flowers did not take place resulted in very low germination. Moreover, a good number of seedlings also died during transplanting. The final number of seedlings in the field was only 3,356. Since our breeding program started in 1977, only 35 numbers of seedling so far were selected. All of them are now under selection procedure. In certain years there was no crossing because of less flowering of sugarcane. In addition, some seedlings were also damaged unintentionally in other years.
