Development of disease resistant varieties is one of the main objectives of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) breeding programs. In the present study, Phytophthora boll rot (Phytophthora nicotianae var. parasitica) symptom development on the detached leaves and bolls of cotton varieties was examined. Resistant variety was evaluated by different inoculation techniques under laboratory conditions. The wound-inoculation method was more reliable than non-wound-inoculation method. Different ages of leaves showed no difference in disease reactions. All tested varieties were susceptible to the disease. Advantages of screening technique by inoculating detached leaf under laboratory conditions for evaluation of resistance are discussed.
