Effects of plant density on yield and quality of sweet corn seeds

When plant per hill was increased, the value measured from seven characters were also increased e.g., the plant height, ear height, number of yellow leaf per plant, percentage of lodging, number of total ear per area, number of ear with unfilled seed set per area and cob weight from the unfilled seed set per area, but delayed 50 % silking date about 5.5 days from 54.75 days to 60.25 days. In contrary the value measured from other sixteen characters decreased when increased number of plant per hill e.g., plant diameter, ear width, ear length, ear weight, 1000 seed weight, number leaf per plant, leaf area per plant, dry weight per plant, ear number per plant, seed weight per ear, cob weight per ear, seed number per ear, seed weight per area, cob weight per area, percentage of ear with filled seed set and yield per rai. When plant spacing increased from 25 to 50 cm. within row, the value measured from seven characters in the study were increased e.g., plant diameter, ear length, ear weight, seed weight per ear, cob weight per ear, number of ear per plant and percentage of ear with filled seed set, meanwhile percentage of lodging, ear height, number of total ear per area, number of ear with unfilled seed set per area, weight of cob from the ear with unfilled seed set per area were decreased. When spacing within rows increased, the 50 % silking date was observed to be earlier about 2.7 days from 59 days to 56.3 days. Highest seed yield of 367 kg. per rai was obtained from 25x75 cm. and 1 plant per hill (8,533 plants/rai) and 355 kg. per rai was obtained from 50x75 cm. and 2 plants per hill (8,553 plants/rai). The lowest seed yield was 210 kg. per rai when sweet corn was grown at 25x75 cm. with 3 plants per hill (25,599 plants/rai). All plant densities used in the experiment did not affect the seed quality.
