Effects of thiourea on sprouting of potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Spunta) tuber

Tubers of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.cv. Spunta) were harvested and stored at ambient temperature (25 deg.celsius) for 30, 45 and 60 days before they were immersed in 1 % thiourea for 0, 10, 20 and 30 minutes to enhance sprouting. Thiourea could break dormancy and stimulate sprouting of potato tubers. Sprouting rate depended on the number of days after harvest and duration of thiourea immersion. The treated tubers had higher number of sprouts than the control.
