The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a large number of nitrogen fixing species in hybrid maize. The study included five strains of Azotobacter chroococcum, a mixture of two best strains of Enterobacter cloacae, a mixture of two strains of Klebsiella pneumonia, a mixture of two strains of Derxia gumosa, a mixture of two strains of Azospirillum lipoferum, two pure strains of each of the above genera, and mixtures of individual strains of all genera. Two maize hybrids, NSSC-606 and PKB-624, were used in the study. They were grown on the hydromorphic black soil in field conditions. Maize seeds were used as the control. Mineral fertilization was not applied. The effectiveness of the nitrogen fixing strains studied depended primarily on the species of the strain and plant genotype. The effectiveness of the tested strains was higher in NSSC-606 than in PKB-624. In NSSC-606, the highest yield increase was obtained with a mixture of two strains of Beijerinska Derx, in PKB-624 with a pure Azotobacter chroococcum.
