Effect of toxic concentrations of lead (10** (-5) to 10** (-3) M) on water relations in young sunflower and sugarbeet plants was studied in conditions of water culture. The increased concentrations of lead in nutrient solution decreased the total water content, relative water content, transpiration intensity, and water potential of the xylem in both sunflower and sugarbeet plants. At the same time, increases occurred in the number of stomata per area unit, on the upper and lower leaf surface, and the diffusion resistance of stomata. The high lead concentrations had a stronger effect on water relations in sunflower than in sugarbeet.
