The effect of inbreeding on the reproductive performance of the Afrikaner cow

The study was in two parts. In the first part effects of inbreeding on conception rate, prenatal loss, calving rate and post-natal loss were estimated. Inbreeding depression was mainly due to the inbreeding of the dam and dam inbreeding significantly depressed calving rate and prenatal loss. Depression of the calving rate was largely due to the increased losses during pregnancy and to a lesser extent due to reduced conception rate. In the second part of the study the effects of inbreeding on cyclicity, heat intensity and mean luteal progesterone concentration were determined. The study eliminates suboptimal progesterone concentration during the luteal phase of the cycle and poor oestrus expression as characteristics of the less fertile inbred animals. It was also concluded that 25mg of PGF2 analogue, dinoprost tromethamine, cause luteolysis in the Africander cow
