An episode suspected vitamin A deficiency in grower pigs is reported. The pigs were on a dry home prepared millet (Pennisetum typhodis), known locally as 'mhunga'. The clinical signs and deaths occurred between the ages of four and a half to five months and included hindlimb incoordination, dog sitting position, paralysis and recumbency. Other signs were lacrymation and a soft moist cough. Gross pathological changes in the carcasses were compression of the vertebral canal, increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure within the cranium and pulmonary congestion, oedema and consolidation with hydrothorax. Histological examination revealed axonal swelling in the spinal cord, vasogenic oedema, cranial nerve ganglia neuronal degeneration, squamous metaplasia of epithelia of the interlobular ducts of the parotid salivary glands
