Chemical control of water hyacinth in Lake Chivero (formerly Lake McIlwaine) and the risk to the public

The water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) has been a serious problem on Lake Chivero for several years and very costly efforts to control it by hand have failed completely. Chemical control is the only practical solution to the present crisis and the spraying of glyphosate was recommended. Public perceptions of herbicides prevented this even though it was clearly necessary. The most effective herbicide for use against water hyacinth is 2.4 dichlorophenoxy acid (2.4-D) but because this herbicide is thought to be dangerous its use , and the use of any other herbicide, has apparently been ruled out. This paper has concentrated on 2.4-D and it is hoped that some of the fears associated with this chemical can be put to rest. Whilst it is probably the most effective herbicide against water hyacinth there are others which can do as well. Many of them, such as glyphosate, are widely used in agriculture and could be used with little risk to the public
