Trace metals were determined since 1973 in sole (Solea solea) from commercial catches from the North Sea, Liverpool Bay, the Bristol Channel, the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Mercury concentrations decreased in the north Sea, Liverpool Bay and the Bristol Channel. Zinc values diminished in the North Sea, Liverpool Bay and the English Channel. Copper values remained at the same level except in the Bristol Channel and the English Channel where they decreased. Lead values showed a downward trend in the North Sea and Liverpool Bay. On the whole, levels of heavy metals in sole have decreased significantly in the past twenty years.
