The taxon Ennea, considered by Pilsbry (1919) and the present authors as a subgenus of Ptychotrema, and by Zilch (1960) as a genus by itself, is defined by the presence of deeply entering upper and lower palatal folds in the aperture with two corresponding spiral furrows on the outside; there is no suprapalatal fold or tooth. A large number of species is treated in alphabetical order, some in great detail, including two new ones, Ptychotrema (E. kalemiense (Zaire, west shores of Lake Tanganyka) and Ptychotrema (E.) pseudosilvaticum (sometimes confused with Ptychotrema silvaticum; the new species widely distributed in Zaire). Various synonymies are suggested. The subspecies thysvillense of Ptychotrema (E.) bequaerti cannot be retained; Ptychotrema (E.) monotes is a synonym of Ptychotrema (E.) jeanneli. Holotypes of Ptychotrema (E.) fraterculus, Ptychotrema (E.) jeanneli, P. (E.) kalemiense, Ptychotrema (E.) lafontainei, and P. (E.) pseudosilvaticum are figured; in addition, paratype material of Ptychotrema (E.) ansorgei, P. (E.) bequaerti, Ptychotrema (E.) chaperi, and P. (E.) pseudosilvaticum is figured. Ptychotrema (Parennea) subtusangulatum is shown to belong to Ennea rather than Parrenea. The IRSBN specimens are potential neotype material.
