With a sampling of 1000 households among the 80 000 numbered in 1984-1985 in Lubumbashi an exploratory investigation has been conducted simultaneously on the evoluting quality of the environment and the population health. Concrete criteria have been chosen for the environment such as water cleanness, evacuation of different types of waste, elimination of mosquitoes. Health has been evaluated via the number of occurrences of certain diseases or symptoms (perceived as diseases by the population). Multivariate analysis conducted to a classification of the neighbourhoods as far as environment dynamics is concerned. Unfortunately it has not been possible with the diseases which correlate poorly with each other and with environmental quality. Failure to correlate is due to air pollution or the different understanding of some medical terms by the neighbourhood population according to their standard of living.
