Brucellosis: serologic survey of animals in a zoo

A serologic survey was carried out in order to find brucellosis reactors in animals at the Metropolitan Zoo, Santiago, Chile. Seven out of 158 animals reacted against Brucella antigen. Six presented titres against Brucella type S antigen (Standard Agglutination Test). These animals were a female wild boar (Sus scrofa) a dwarf nanny goat (Capra hircus), two white-faced male monkeys (Cebus albifrons), a tigress (Panthera tigris) and a female jaguar (Panthera onca). The last two animals, also reacted to the Rose Bengal Test. Serum from a female sacred papion monkey (Papio hamadryas), was the only reactor to the Gel Diffusion Test for Brucella type R
