[Evaluation of the control of maize cutworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie), with Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner in the laboratory]

Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (B.t.1 0 Dipel 2X, with a potency of 32.000 UI/mg; B.t.2 = Javelin WG, 53.000 US/mg) and Endosulfan, at 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/l, were tested against newly born Heliothis zea (Boddie) larvae. Treatments were applied to fresh corn silks. Once dried, these were placed into gelatine capsules enclosing a neonate larva each. The effectiveness of each treatment was evaluated with daily mortality counts. Sprayed silks were replaced with untreated ones 48 h post applications. Best treatments 96 h post application were, in decreasing order (all in g/l) Endosulfan 1.5; Endosulfan 1.0; Endosulfan 0.5; B.t.2 1.5; B.t.2 1.0; B.t.2 = 0.5; B.t.1 1.0 and B.t.1 1.5. All these treatments achieved 100%-95% mortality. The same formulations were applied at 1.5 g/l on H. zea eggs to determine a possible larvicidal effect during emergence of larvae. Best treatment was B.t.2 (48.1% mortality). B.t.1 produced only 6.6% mortality. Endosulfan had no effect on these larvae
