The pea crop yield depends essentially on its standing ability. It may be improved by using leafless (afaf stst) or semi-leafless (afaf StSt) pea varieties. But usually they yield lower than the conventional varieties (AfAf - StSt), because the growth rate and the early relative growth rate of the crop appears to be lower in leafless than in normal peas and this may result in a small low plant biomass and economic yield. Our trials at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Station have shown that in our republic it is recommendable to grow pea in mixtures with cereals (1:1). For such mixtures the conventional pea varieties with medium straw length suit better, semi-leafless peas could not be competitive there. Because of the suppress effect of cereals on peas, there are fewer pods per plant and fewer seeds in the pod in mixture than in pure stand. In such mixtures (1:1) the number of pods and seeds decreases more on semi-leafless peas than in case of conventional varieties
