Genetic Diversity of Introduced Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Varieties and their Performance for oil and seed yield in Ethiopia
1994
Haile Kefene (Institute of Agricultural Research, Addis Abeba (Ethiopia))
An experiment consisting of 20 sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) varieties from seven geographic origins of the world, was conducted at Awasa and Arsi-negelle Research Centers during the 1992/93 crop season, in randomized complete block design with three replications to study the genetic divergence, their performance for oil and seed yields, and associations between different traits so as to determine the major yield components to base the selection program on. The combined analyses of variances revealed that there were highly significant differences among the cultivars for yield and yield attributes; number of seeds per head, 1000-seed weight, oil content, and harvest index, as well as different growth and agronomic traits. The cultivars RO-1198, Ha 302, Pop-158 and Edrine 87 showed better performance for yields, and yield attributes.
