A herbicide verification trial was carried out during 1988 and 1989 in 20 sites around Bako to study the comparative advantage of herbicides in alleviating the problem of labor shortages in peak season and verify the effectiveness and economic acceptance of herbicides. The mean general weed control efficiency at early stage was 83 percent and 71 percent for atrazine + metolachlor (1:1) and atrazine respectively. There was no significant yield difference between treatments. Atrazine + metolachlor and atrazine saved 380 and 355 labor hours ha-1 required for maize weeding respectively as compared to the farmers weeding practice. From the two herbicides atrazine is recommended for two reasons: 1) equal yield with atrazine + metolachlor despite its inferiority in general weed control effect and 2) it is cheaper than atrazine + metolachlor. Farmers expressed willingness to use herbicides. Thus, it is important to make atrazine available to farmers at reasonable price along with necessary advisory services by extension agents.
