Status of the Spice Extraction Industry and Prospects for Diversification into New Products

Spices have been valued for their flavor and seasoning for culinary purposes since time immemorial. Though they are not directly used in western countries at present, their extracts (essential oils and oleoresins) are of considerable importance in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. A number of developing countries, mainly in Asia, have developed technologies to export various spice extracts as value added commodities based on indigenous spices. In Ethiopia, although there are a number of plants that can produce spice extracts, there is only the spice processing facility, namely, the Ethiopian Spice Extraction factory (ESEF). A reliable and good quality source of raw materials in one of the essential factors that contribute to the diversification of such spice extraction manufacturing industries. In this paper, the status of raw material supply and the prospects of diversification of the products in the Ethiopian Spices Extraction Factory are highlighted.
